Below is the latest news on the NRL betting Scandal that is centred around a North Queensland/Canterbury game in 2010.

There will be no rumours or stories posted on this forum, The Admnistrators will update this forum as news comes to hand but due to legal reasons this thread will locked to prevent any poster post any rumours that may put this site in legal trouble.

Leading rugby league player-manager Sam Ayoub has been arrested in connection with the police investigation into suspicious betting activity on a game last August.
Another man, 49, was arrested by police about 9.45am at a home in Punchbowl before being taken to Bankstown police station. Charges are expected to be laid.
Detectives are also executing a search warrant at a business premises on Hay Street in Leichhardt.

About 11am today, Ayoub, 49, was arrested by detectives from the Casino and Racing Investigation Unit after he went to Campsie police station. Charges are expected to be laid.
Additional charges have also been laid against Bulldogs prop Ryan Tandy in court this morning, to do with his allegedly having provided false and misleading evidence to a NSW Crime Commission hearing.
Today's arrests follow investigations by police into an alleged illegal betting activity surrounding the Round 24 NRL match between the Bulldogs and the Cowboys.
Strike Force Suburb comprises detectives from the Firearms and Organised Crime Squad's Casino and Racing Investigation Unit and was established to investigate the alleged incident. Investigations are continuing.
Police laid an additional three charges against Tandy, 29, at Downing Centre Local Court in relation to three separate incidents relating to giving false/misleading evidence at a NSW Crime Commission hearing.
Tandy was previously arrested by police in Sydney's CBD on February 2.
Earlier, Tandy pleaded not guilty to lying to the NSW Crime Commission about his betting activity on two NRL games last year.
Tandy, 29, appeared today at the Downing Centre Local Court on four charges of giving evidence that was false or misleading at two Crime Commission hearings.
Police allege that, at a hearing on January 20, Tandy lied about his "betting activity with [former journalist] John Schell".
Then at a second hearing, on February 2, police say he gave false or misleading evidence about:
- Having a conversation discussing his position on the field at kick-off during a Bulldogs v Cowboys game in August last year.
- His betting activity and access to his TAB account.
- Having placed a bet on the Bulldogs v Titans game on June 18 last year.
The NSW Crime Command's Racing and Casino Investigation Unit has been examining suspicious betting on the clash between the Bulldogs and the North Queensland Cowboys.
The incident involved a plunge on a betting option that the first points of the game would come from a penalty goal.
Tandy was penalised two minutes into the game for impeding Cowboys playmaker Grant Rovelli in front of the posts.
The Cowboys did not opt for a kick at goal, but chose to take a quick tap and scored a try out wide.
After he pleaded not guilty today, Tandy's bail was continued and the case was adjourned to April 7.

NRL betting Scandal Empty Re: NRL betting Scandal

Post by Redszone Fri Mar 04, 2011 10:23 am

Punters stood to win hundreds of thousands of dollars in winnings from the NRL betting scandal involving Bulldogs player Ryan Tandy and two other men.

Police have released the CCTV images of four men they want to speak to about an alleged NRL betting scam.

Canterbury Bulldogs player Ryan Tandy has already been charged in the probe, while player agent Sam Ayoub and ex-player John Elias were arrested yesterday.

This man was seen placing a bet on Liverpool Road, Ashfield, in Sydney.
The four men are alleged to have placed bets of up to $500 the day before the game between the Bulldogs and North Queensland Cowboys last August.

Gangs Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Arthur Katsogiannis repeatedly stressed during a press conference this morning that there was no suggestion the men "committed an offence or did anything unlawful" but that "they may have information that could assist us".

"These are serious allegations. We haven't treated them lightly and we don't go out and charge people lightly either unless we have reasonable cause to believe there is enough evidence there to prepare criminal charges."

Police want to speak to this man who was seen placing a bet on Botany Road, Beaconsfield, in Sydney.
He would not speculate on the identity of the men, saying the images were released because the men could not be identified.

"I can confirm that the bets that were placed by these individuals were on the first scoring option that the Cowboys would kick a penalty goal.

"The odds started at 13 to 1 and went down as low as 3 to 1.

These men were seen placing bets at a hotel on Sturt Street in Townsville.
"From what we were told by the chief steward, the earlier the bets were placed, the higher the odds.

"I believe that at one stage it was up to $50,000 that was on this particularly exotic bet."

The men were all captured on CCTV placing bets on Friday, August 20, at betting facilities in Beaconsfield and Ashfield in NSW, and Townsville in Queensland, police said.

The first man is seen placing a bet on Botany Road, Beaconsfield, between 11am and 11.20am. He is described as being of Middle Eastern/ Mediterranean appearance, of slim build, with short black hair, aged in his late 20s, and wearing a dark suit, light shirt and black shoes.

The second man is seen placing a bet on Liverpool Road, Ashfield, between 5.20pm and 5.36pm. He is described as being of white/European appearance, of medium/solid build, with grey hair, aged in his late 40s to early 50s, and wearing a dark long-sleeved shirt, black shorts and glasses.

The third and fourth men are seen placing bets at a hotel on Sturt Street in Townsville, between 4.16pm and 4.22pm. One is described as being of white/European appearance, of muscular build, with a beard/goatee, aged in his 20s, and wearing a yellow polo-style shirt, black baseball cap with a motif on the front. The other is described as being white/ European appearance, of slim build, with short brown hair, aged in his 20s and wearing a black T-shirt with a large motif on the front.

Detective Superintendent Katsogiannis did not answer a question about the level of betting activity on the Bulldogs-Cowboys game compared with other games, saying only that police were reliant on the advice of experts more familiar with the industry.

"For a start I don't bet. I'm not an expert on the betting. We've relied on advice. The advice we've had at hand was that usually exotic bets only bring a very, very minimal amount of bets - possibly about $500," he said.

He said a cumulative amount of up to $50,000 was placed on this particular bet.

Detective Superintendent Katsogiannis added that the NRL has been extremely co-operative and "have left no stone unturned" in helping police with their investigations.

He appealed to the four men or anyone else with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

"All information will be treated with the strictest confidence," he said.

Bulldogs Terminate the Contract of Ryan Tandy

18/03/2011 1:33:29 PM
The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs Rugby League Club has terminated the contract of Ryan Tandy, effective immediately.

The Club made the decision to terminate the contract of employment of Mr Tandy following a show cause hearing before the Board on Wednesday 16 March 2011, which Mr Tandy attended with his lawyer.

“The purpose of the show cause hearing was to determine whether Mr Tandy had placed a bet in relation to the Bulldogs game against the Gold Coast Titans on 18 June 2010, in which he played for the Club,” Bulldogs Chief Executive Todd Greenberg said.

“Mr Tandy declined to answer the Club’s question concerning this issue, based on legal advice.

“The Club formed the view that it was untenable for Mr Tandy to remain employed by the Club, and continue to be paid his salary, in circumstances where he was refusing to provide information about a matter that is wholly within his knowledge and relates to duties which he expressly owes to the Club.

“It is important to note that the action taken by the Club today is distinct and separate from the serious criminal charges that Mr Tandy is facing.

“Mr Tandy is of course entitled to the presumption of innocence in relation to those charges.”

Ryan Tandy is suing Canterbury-Bankstown for unfair dismissal, and will argue his sacking may have been invalid because the entire Bulldogs board failed to appear at Wednesday's show-cause hearing.

Unfair dismissal: Tandy will sue Bulldogs + 22 The purse: $100,000 for Elias if sting worked Ruling: Ayoub free to continue working + 3 Police allegations: 'Elias changed costumes in bet frenzy' Contract: NRL stars bound to Ayoub Identified: Club owner bet on match Search intensifies: Images of betting men revealed Betting sting: Ayoub, Elias face 10 years' jail + Bet scandal: Tandy pleads not guilty to charge + 6 Suspicious: NRL refer betting probe to police Explosive: Match-fixing rumour rocks NRL

Tandy's lawyer will lodge industrial proceedings on Monday in the wake of Canterbury-Bankstown's decision to terminate the prop's $170,000-a-year contract.

It's understood he will claim that the Bulldogs erred by not assembling the full board for Tandy's hearing, with only chairman Ray Dib and directors Paul Dunn, Barry Ward and Anthony Elias present.

Chief executive Todd Greenberg was also in the room for the 30-minute hearing at Canterbury Leagues Club.

With the matter headed to court, Greenberg declined to comment. But a Bulldogs insider said a minimum of four directors constituted "the board" under the club's guidelines.

Solicitor Danny Eid, who is defending Tandy against charges relating to the suspicious failed betting plunge on last year's match against North Queensland Cowboys, will also accuse the Bulldogs of prejudicing those criminal proceedings by asking whether he had placed a bet on a separate game against Gold Coast Titans.

Eid said Tandy had repeatedly denied the general breaches levelled against him, and the Bulldogs had no right to ask specifically about matters subject to his client's criminal case.

Tandy declined to answer the question during Wednesday's hearing - and the Bulldogs accordingly sacked him for refusing to co-operate.

Eid advised Tandy to remain silent, given the hearing was being tape recorded and that any statements could be later subpoenaed as evidence in his criminal case, which is next scheduled for court on April 7.

"Mr Tandy was issued with a breach notice but he's denied the breaches," Eid said.

"Ryan was dismissed because he allegedly didn't answer a question that was put to him by the chairman.

"As a consequence of his sacking, we will be commencing proceedings in Fair Work Australia and Ryan will be seeking reinstatement."

Tandy has been charged with four counts of lying to a police investigation into the NRL betting scandal, one of which relates to the issue of whether he had a wager on the game against the Titans. He has denied those charges.

The 29-year-old had been stood down on full pay since the charges were laid on February 2, and now must convince the NRL to re-register him should another club offer a lifeline.

Neither Tandy nor his manager Sam Ayoub returned calls on Saturday, but it's understood the Ireland international is determined to find a new team.

Garnsey hits out at Tandy sacking
Rugby League Players Association chief David Garnsey slammed Canterbury's decision to sack Ryan Tandy and called on NRL clubs to respect a player's right to remain silent when quizzed about a matter that's before a criminal court.

Tandy, who faces four charges of providing false or misleading evidence to the NSW Crime Commission, was axed by the Bulldogs last week after refusing to answer questions about the charges.

The 29-year-old prop's charges followed investigations into suspicious betting activity on last year's round 24 encounter between North Queensland and the Bulldogs.

"The NRL rules should be amended to prevent players' careers from being adversely affected before they have had a chance to defend themselves," Garnsey said in a statement on Tuesday.

"It is not an offence, as I understand it, for a person to refuse to answer questions, including questions that may tend to incriminate them, asked by persons other than investigating authorities.

"On the other hand, the privilege against self-incrimination is a long-standing cornerstone of the criminal law."

Garnsey noted that Canterbury acted on legal advice in sacking Tandy and stressed he was not seeking to enter into a debate about whether the dismissal was lawful.

"Mr Tandy has legal representation and no doubt the question of legality will be pursued by his lawyers as they see fit," he said.

"My belief ... is that the proper place to hear evidence and determine guilt or innocence is the trial of the accused, with all the safeguards that that process guarantees.

"To force an accused player to participate in a pre-trial interview or hearing, while criminal charges are pending, for the purpose of determining the facts, is effectively to usurp the trial.

"I have repeatedly said in recent weeks in relation to other matters that the presumption of innocence is paramount and the NRL itself has acted in accordance with that presumption.

"For a club to rely on a player's silencebefore he has had his day in court as grounds for dismissal, on the other hand, seems to me to be proceeding on the basis of a presumption of guilt."

He was refused bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court tomorrow (March 24, 2011).

The man was previously arrested by police on 3 March this year and charged with attempt to obtain financial ad advantage by deception.

Sacked Canterbury Bulldogs forward Ryan Tandy and player agent Sam Ayoub have also been charged over an alleged attempted betting sting on the Round 24 match between North Queensland Cowboys-Bulldogs NRL game on August 21 last year.

"Today’s arrest follows ongoing investigations by Strike Force Suburb detectives attached to the State Crime Command’s Casino and Racing Investigation Unit," NSW Police said in a statement.
